Gato

Gato is un-conventional in its engineering, Design & Aesthetics. It has a skeletal ‘Time Only’ movement. The design is contemporary.  It has an all mechanical ‘in house’ movement that was designed and hand made by Dilip Sivaraman. Gato is meant to last decades. Ease of maintenance has been a huge priority in its design.  The contemporary Wood & Glass case has been designed by Namrata & Pranab. What is markedly different about ‘Gato’ is the dial (or the absence of it).
It has a Planetary Gear Motionwork in which the dial acts like a stationary ring gear. It also has an un-usual maintaining power mechanism made of planetary gears. This keeps the clock ticking while being wound. The pendulum Rod is made on Invar. This keeps the clock precise despite changes in temperature. The Case measures 1.9m x 0.3m x 0.6m.  It has a 8 day winding power reserve. The compensated pendulum bob is 3Kgs & is stainless steel.
The pendulum rod is Invar. The movement is mostly made of Stainless Steel.  It has a 60 beats per minute escapement. The palet teeth are made of tungsten Carbide.  The clock has ball races in most arbors. The escapement runs on PTFE plain bearings.

Gato won us a finalist place in a 2016 International competition for young watchmakers in Switzerland. Gato was exhibited at Samay Bharti 2018 in Mumbai.

Top Left: The Wheel in focus is the great wheel. The wheel is part of a maintaining power mechanism which employs a planetary gear system. The planet gears, ring gear and the rachet can be seen in the photo. In front and out of focus is the dial/ring gear for the planetary gear motionwork.
Centre Left: The winding square and the winding wheel. The pulley wheel to offset the weight rope is seen on the right. The weight rope is braided kevlar.
Bottom Left: The weight. We have designed the weight in a way that the pulley is integrated into it. The pulley runs on ball races to reduce friction.
Top Right: Gato in his teak wood case.
